Response from Vermont Senator Joe Benning to my email addressing my concerns about proposed bill S.94:
March 1, 2013
Actually Nic, it would appear you don’t need to have me explain very much since you’ve raised the very same concerns that we’ve been talking about in committee. Your one question about a “non-hospitalization order” pertains to those situations where a court may not necessarily believe a person needs to be hospitalized but does need to be supervised with some kind of specific treatment provisions.
I’m taking liberty of forwarding your email on to my fellow committee members so they know there is concern from the public as well as internally. As I write this I have no idea whether the chair will further consider this bill, but if he does there will be an opportunity for further testimony. Should you decide you’d like to testify about your concerns let me know and we’ll arrange for that to happen. In the meantime, keep an eye on the committee’s schedule so you are aware of when this bill should pop up for discussion. Sometimes I have a lot going on and I may not realize it is up for discussion until the very last moment. I wouldn’t want you to miss an opportunity if you really want to speak about the bill. Thanks for writing.
